Alzheimer’s is the leading cause of age-related dementia and is thought to be driven by the accumulation of a sticky protein called beta-amyloid that aggregates to form amyloid plaques in the brain. Microglia, immune cells that reside in the brain, attempt to clear this buildup, but in Alzheimer’s, they appear to be fighting a losing battlle.
That is where the Pet test comes in. They infuse an radio active substance into your body or in this case your brain which show which section of your brain the amyloid Plaques are at work in. They then know which section of the brain to target their cure. These are called clinical trials and I am enrolled in one of these trials called the”Eisai Research study” I don’t know much about the study except it’s supposed to last about 2 1/2 years and for participating I am to get a medicine or placebo to take during the trial. If at the end I was taking the placebo I can switch to the medicine at no charge to me if it was successful in the trial. It’s a crap shoot to say the least but it’s better than nothing since my neurologist says there is nothing on the market that worth taking right now. So at least I get a small chance by being in the study. something is better than nothing the way I see it.
So this post is my PET scan POST in case your interested:
PET Scan date: 2/20/2019 at 1:45 PM
Arrived at the INdependent imaging right on time but had to wait 20 minutes to get started.
Called me into start and was taken to a very small room with all kinds of radioactive stickers pasted all over the door, real comforting to start. Male nurse sat me down in a large recliner and started to tell me all that was going to happen, when finished excused himself and said he was going to get the radio active material to infuse into my body. came back approximately 15 minutes later and started the infusion. He was excellent, I didn’t feel a thing, So know i’m radioactive and he tells me it will take about 90 minutes for it to get to my brain so they can do the scan. he gives me a nice warm blanket and I decide to take a nap. He wakes me up 90 minutes later and takes me to the PET Scan room put me on the table , tapes my head in place so I couldn’t move , starts the scan telling me it will take 30 minutes and leaves, at least I think he left, don’t really know. THe thing that shocked me was that it was completely silent, not a sound except I could hear and feel a fan rotating somewhere. The next i Knew he came in helped me to my feet and said they would send the results to my doctor and that I was free to go home.
There was a Burger King store down the road so we stopped and had a late afternoon snack, arriving home about 5PM. I guess the next step is getting the medication from the trial doctor and then I’m officially in the trial. I”ll be glad to get started!
If you need any more info leave me a comment and I’ll be glad to respond.
